For the first time, Congress has agreed to fund treatment for eating disorders among members of the military. The Academy for Eating Disorders recently announced that the, funding will be part of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program, or CDMRP, which supports research in science and medicine, with the goal of improving the health and well-being of military service members. Beneficiaries of the new funding program include veterans, retired military personnel, and their family members. Results of one study showed that as many as 30% of female cadets and 34% of active duty female service members were at risk for developing an eating disorder; this risk crossed all branches of the services (Clin Psychol. 2014; 21:398). The same study found that few service members seek help for their EDs. [Also see also an article on military sexual trauma and development of EDs elsewhere in this issue.]
